FAQ
What is a psychoeducational evaluation?
A psychoeducational evaluation is a process that includes testing procedures to uncover your child’s strengths and areas of weakness. It will provide an overall picture of your child’s academic, cognitive and social-emotional abilities and provide concrete recommendations to support your child in and outside of the classroom.
What does a psychoeducational evaluation involve?
A comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation involves multiple steps. We start with a parent interview to take a detailed history and have parents complete a comprehensive Developmental History to provide comprehensive background information. I collect report cards, previous assessments, or any relevant “paper trail” to better understand the history of your child as a learner. I collect questionnaire data from parents, the child, and teachers to get normative data and see how your child is functioning compared to their same aged peers. I also reach out to teachers and other service providers in your child’s life (e.g., therapists, educational therapists, speech and language pathologists, etc.) to gather their valuable input.
In general, testing will assess intellectual functioning, academic achievement (in reading, math, and written language), and information processing skills such as attention, executive functioning, processing speed, and memory. This helps to determine diagnoses, if appropriate, and to suggest targeted interventions. You will receive a report that will include comprehensive and detailed recommendations for school, home, and any additional outside services or support. If warranted, I include diagnoses and recommendations for school-based accommodation plans.
What questions can be answered?
-Questions around academic functioning in the domains of reading, writing or math that may indicate a specific learning disorder, such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia or Dysgraphia
-Questions about neurodivergence, including questions of meeting criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-Other mood disorders may also be a part of the question, and are important to rule in or out when understanding a child’s learning profile
How much does it cost?
A comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation typically runs between $5000-5500. This cost includes my time (typically 25+ hours per evaluation) and is based on my expertise and 13+ years of experience with assessment.
